the Next UN Secretary-General

We welcome that the United Nations General
Assembly elected today by acclamation Minister Ban Ki-moon of
Foreign Affairs and Trade as the next UN Secretary-General. We also
extend gratitude to all the nations of the world for their
endorsement of Minister Ban.
The election of Minister Ban as the new Secretary-General is a
significant and proud occasion that constitutes a testimony to the
heightened status of Korea in the world. The election is also
considered to represent the tribute of the international community
to the Korean people who have accomplished democracy and the
national economy ranked around the 10th globally, overcoming poverty
and the Korean War.
We trust that Minister Ban will develop the United Nations into a
more responsible and trusted organization on the basis of his
diplomatic expertise and leadership as well as his experiences and
the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Participatory
Government. Furthermore, we expect that he will contribute greatly
to world peace and common prosperity, including the resolution of
the North Korean nuclear issue.
Along with the Korean people, the Government will continue to
support Mr. Ban so that he will be able to carry out his duties
successfully as the UN Secretary-General.
