Seoul, Jul 20 2006 (Korea Newswire)--
Statement by MOFAT Spokesperson on the Adoption of the UN
Security Council Resolution 1695 on the Missile Launches by
North Korea
The ROK Government has expressed profound concern over North
Korea's recent missile launches, which constitute an act of
provocation unacceptable to the international community.
The ROK Government has maintained the position that the
international community must take appropriate steps to
prevent the recurrence of a similar situation by conveying a
clear, resolute and timely message to North Korea on the
missile launches.
In this regard, the ROK Government supports the UN Security
Council's unanimous adoption of Resolution 1695 on North
Korea's missile launches, and appreciates the efforts of
Council members.
We urge North Korea to accept the grave and united message
of the international community, as contained in the
aforementioned resolution, to refrain from any actions that
could further aggravate the situation, and to reinstate its
pre-existing commitments to a moratorium on missile
launching.
Furthermore, we hope that North Korea will return to the
Six-Party Talks at an early date, and that consultations
will be promptly initiated on measures for the
implementation of the Joint Statement of September 19, 2005,
leading to the diplomatic resolution of all related issues
through dialogue.
