Seoul, Aug 22 2005 (Korea Newswire)--
The number of male salaried workers taking a long vacation
for babysitting is increasing, the Ministry of Labor
reported on Sunday (Aug. 21).
According to the report, the number of male workers taking
childcare leave soared 40.9 percent, from 88 in the first
seven months of last year to 124 in the corresponding period
of this year.
The total number of employees taking the leave reached 5,072
in the January-July period of last year. It increased by
20.6 percent in the same period of this year with 6,115, the
report said.
The amount of childcare leave allowances also jumped 56.2
percent from 10.2 billion won to 15.9 billion won.
Employees with a child under one year of age are entitled to
take childcare leave.
They can take a year off at the longest until the baby turns
one year old while receiving an allowance of 400,000 won per
month during the leave.
Meanwhile, the number of workers taking maternity leave also
rose from 22,407 in the first seven months of last year to
24,147 in the same period this year, with a total of 27
billion won in day-off allowances given to the workers.
In the maternity leave, female workers can take 90 days off
before and after childbirth. The government gives the
working moms 30 days of pay with the employer in charge
required to pay for the other 60 days.
To help lessen the burden on employers and further promote
childbirth, the government plans to cover all the payment
for maternity leaves next year in workplaces with 300
employees or less.
¡°Workers at small- and medium-sized companies find it
difficult to make use of maternity leave as their employers
feel burdened to give them the allowance,¡± a ministry
official said.
The ministry will also keep an eye on whether maternity or
childcare leave is implemented in workplaces with many
female workers, he said.
